  • Carnival is the ten-day period during which, in the 17th century, the people of Venice could let their appetite for feast and debauchery run wild before entering Lent. Through this brilliant, colorful show, Vincent Dumestre and Cécile Roussat have wished to recreate the atmosphere of a time devoted to boundless pleasures and passions.
Acrobats, jugglers, comedians, dancers, mimes, and of course singers and musicians pervade the stage in an extravagant homage to the continuous show of performances and intrigues which took place from streets to palaces. These are pictured through the set, as we are taken from a magnificent banquet of the nobility to a breathless manhunt along the canals, to a trestle theatre just built up for the purpose of parodying Monteverdi’s Lamento della ninfa. All of these episodes take place to the sound of famous or unheard tunes from 17th century Italy, in which Le Poème Harmonique have gained worldwide fame through numerous CD albums and concert programs since their foundation. Baroque dance, Commedia dell’arte and circus arts meet with irresistible ciaccone, moresche and tarantelle, which sometimes give way to improvisation in a baroque spirit. Thus the essence of a formidable social celebration is revived, exalting the echoes of pagan rituals and the triumph of life and delight over war, famines, epidemics and the harshness of existence.
This production sums up the unique experience of Le Poème Harmonique in baroque music and performance arts at large, and has enjoyed formidable success at each new run since its creation, through an exceptional number of performances.
